Wax Encaustic Workshops:

Traditional and Non-Traditional Approaches

These Wax Encaustic workshops will teach you all the basics of Encaustic Technique. In longer workshops you will have additional time to refine your approach, and develop your own ideas.

The Workshops will teach you the fundamentals of traditional Encaustic Painting, including traditional as well as contemporary approaches and techniques,

We will discuss supports, grounds, materials and approaches. We will have time to include many variations, including the use of photographic and digital imagery. It is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience in Encaustic Painting who want to refine their approach.

Encaustic Painting involves applying layers of pigmented wax, which are then fused together with heat. The word Encaustic comes from the Greek, meaning to burn in. This glazing process allows an unusual depth and richness of color to be achieved.

The instructor, Ellen Koment, has been working with Wax Encaustic, as well as other materials for many years, and teaching for almost as many. She currently teaches Painting and Drawing at UNM LA, and at Santa Fe Community College, and has been teaching private workshops in Encaustic Painting for ten years.
