New Mexico Encaustics

These paintings reflect a number of elements..The process of this ancient medium, Wax Encaustic, where hot wax and pigments are painted in multiple layer; my approach to painting; and the landscapes they are based upon

I have often worked with layers, in oil and acrylic, so the discovery of wax as a process, some ten years ago, was a gift and a delight. It was a natural enhancement of the way I worked. I believe that the painting is the product of my process..and that all parts of that process..from initial impulse, to finished piece, should remain visible in the completed work.

The wax is a process of layering, each layer being a product of what’s beneath it, and then fused with it’s previous layer with the application of heat. It is both a fluid and a transparent medium where control is enhanced by happy accident

They are a reflection of the landscape in the sense that I see the landscape, and my pleasure in it, as dynamic rather than static. Our perception of the landscape is based on the way that the light and shadow affect it at any given moment. Nowhere is that more apparent than here in New Mexico, where our skies play a never ending, and always enchanting melody.

As abstract as the paintings may often appear, they are in fact based in this trilogy of factors, each intertwined with the other.
