ELLEN KOMENT
Born in New York City, and studying at the High School of Music and Art, and then at Cooper Union Art School, she learned to combine the energy of the abstract expressionists with the exactitude of the Albers theories of color. At graduate school at U.C. Berkeley, she was influenced by the California Figure Painter's love of large, light-filled planes. In the early 80's, she first came to New Mexico as a resident at the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos. Repeated trips to the southwest ensued until she moved here almost 10 years ago. Since that move, her interest has moved increasingly towards Wax Encaustic until, in the last seven years, she has used it almost exclusively. She has been teaching for 20 years, first at Santa Rosa Junior College in Northern California, and now at the University of New Mexico and Santa Fe Community College. She offers private workshops in Wax Encaustic.
